The History of Apple River Canyon State Park

In the nineteenth century, American pioneers choose the area of Apple River Canyon State Park for its wealth in mines. This principal quality attracted many miners from around the country who created Millville, a roaring boom town. Known for its large sawmills, this once-thriving town flourished until 1854, before it was completely washed away by a flood in 1892.

What You’ll See

The Park is named after the powerful Apple River, which flowed for hundreds of years and formed the intricate network of canyons and cliffs in the area. Now, this 297-acre park features massive limestone bluffs, deep ravines, babbling streams, and an abundance of wildlife.
