The History of Our Bed and Breakfast
In 1867, our stunning bed and breakfast was constructed. Originally the Farmers Home Hotel, this beloved attraction became a symbol of hospitality in Galena. Now the home of Farmers Guest House, it’s one of the select few places in the Galena Historic District that’s still maintaining its founding purpose. To continue with its tradition, our charming retreat extends a warm welcome to visitors traveling that need a place to stay. We were also voted one of “The Top Bed and Breakfasts of 2015” by BedandBreakfast.com, so start planning your trip with us today!
The Past of Galena
Apart of the “lead rush” during the 1800s, Galena became a landmark town for many miners migrating to start a better life for their family. In fact, in the 1840s, the name “galena” originated from the ore itself. This precious metal had many uses including acting as a glaze in pottery. In addition, our charming town was a post-war retreat for General Ulysses S. Grant. To honor him, you can visit the historic Grant Park and even his residence. For even more information about Galena history, we encourage you to visit one of our marvelous museums!
The Helluva Half Mile
Just around the corner from Farmers Guest House, begin your journey on the Helluva Half Mile. This feature in the heart of the Galena Historic District showcases the preserved buildings. Now, many of these period-oriented facades houses unique boutiques, delightful restaurants, and eclectic shops. When you take a culinary tour or go window shopping, you’ll have a magnificent time exploring!
Each year, the Galena Historic District is the scenic backdrop for an array of seasonal celebrations. Perhaps one of the most popular is the Annual Tour of Historic Galena Homes in late September. This informative tour takes you through the many historic homes in Galena, IL, including the US Grant home. On your guided experience, you’ll be enlightened on what makes our town so special while learning more about our past.
Another fabulous festival is the Annual Nouveau Weekend in mid-November. This annual extravaganza marks the first wine harvest of the season at Galena Cellars. This inviting winery celebrates the tradition of Le Beaujolais Nouveau, which is a technique used to bottle the first wines of the harvest, just weeks after the fermentation process. In addition to the vineyard, local dining establishments and other Galena businesses feature live music, wine tastings, dinner specials and gatherings all weekend. You don’t want to miss either of these delightful annual events!
