The Historical Significance of This Site
In 1832, the 16-week Black Hawk War took place on the hilly landscape of our northwestern corner of Illinois. It was fought between a small militia of about 70 soldiers and 200 warriors from the Sac Indian Tribe led by Black Hawk. The rural army defended the Apple River Fort from threatening forces, and now, it stands as a landmark to commemorate the militia’s victory. In fact, American figures like Abraham Lincoln, Jefferson Davis, and General Winfield Scott were involved in this battle!
What You’ll See
As you walk this National Register of Historic Places destination, meander through the recently restored site. It’s constructed with logs and showcases the rural lifestyle of the 19th century. Items include dining furniture, lamps, a replica of a bed, stone-covered fireplace, wood-burning stove, and metal irons. Each one provides a glimpse into the lives of the early settlers. When you tour, bring your camera and photograph your experience!
Want to Remember Your Time
Once you’ve explored the Apple River Fort, make the quick trip back to the Interpretative Center on Main Street. The friendly faces of the staff welcome you as well as a scaled replica of this site, a video of the battle of the fort playing, little-known facts about the Apple River Fort, and antiques from the 19th century. After you browse the exhibits, check out the selection of memorabilia, including t-shirts, books about Galena, and other trinkets.
