A Look at the History of Apple River Canyon
Long before the area became a state park, the land surrounding Apple River Canyon played an important role in the lead mining boom that shaped northwestern Illinois during the 1800s. The nearby settlement of Millville grew quickly thanks to mining and lumber operations powered by the Apple River.
At its peak, Millville included homes, sawmills, and businesses serving the growing population. But after repeated flooding from the river — including a devastating flood in the late 1800s — the town eventually disappeared. Today, the area has returned to a much quieter landscape centered around conservation and recreation.
What You’ll See

The Park is named after the powerful Apple River, which flowed for hundreds of years and formed the intricate network of canyons and cliffs in the area. Now, the park features massive limestone bluffs, deep ravines, babbling streams, and an abundance of wildlife.
One of the things people notice most when visiting Apple River Canyon is how different the landscape feels compared to much of Illinois. Instead of flat prairie, you’ll find densely wooded hillsides, narrow valleys, and shaded creeks running through the park.
As you meander through this surreal landscape, you’ll see an array of flora and fauna. The park features 14 fern species, over 500 herbaceous plant species, and 165 varieties of flowers. In addition, there is a variety of wildlife, including deer, squirrels, rabbits, and 47 bird species. When you visit, we suggest bringing your camera and photographing this incredible park!
What to Do
Apple River Canyon State Park offers a range of outdoor activities. Whether you want to go trout fishing or swim in the lake, you’ll find several wonderful ways to spend your time in the water! If you plan to hike or explore on foot, there are five trails from which you can choose (and the longest one is only about a mile and a half):
- Pine Ridge
- Tower Rock
- River Route
- Sunset
- Primrose
Some trails lead through wooded areas near the river, while others climb higher into the bluffs for elevated canyon views. Because portions of the park can be rocky or muddy depending on the season, sturdy shoes are recommended.
The park also features four picnic areas with tables, grills, drinking water, and bathrooms. A picnic in one of these areas is the perfect way to unwind after a day of adventures at the park.
