How to Get From Milwaukee, WI to Galena, IL
Plan the Road Trip
Depending on the route you choose, the drive from Milwaukee to Galena is about 160 miles and typically takes just under three hours with ideal traffic. We recommend taking Interstate 94 West, so you can stop in Madison halfway through your trip. As the capital of Wisconsin, the city is a great place for a history lesson and to stop for a delicious meal. Although this route is a bit longer than others, it takes the same amount of driving time, so we think it’s worth it.
The Route
Take I-94 West for about 70 miles until you get to Madison. Once you’re in the city, take exit 240A on the left to merge onto I-90 East toward Janesville. After less than four miles, take exit 142A to get onto US 18 West/US 151 South. You then take exit 258 after about eight miles. Once you’re off the exit, follow the signs and turn left to stay on US 18 West/US 151 South. Stay on the highway for about 65 miles until you get to exit 19. Take the exit to merge onto Wisconsin State Road 80. After about 15 miles, you’ll cross the Illinois state line and the road with change to Illinois State Road 84. Turn left onto US Highway 20 West after about 4 miles. Stay on the road, and it will turn into Spring Street. You should see Farmers Guest House on the right after about three miles!
