Farmers Guest House Sets Breakfast Record

We set a record this weekend! Farmers Guest House not only is the best bed and breakfast in Galena, we’re now also known as the premier Galena inn that served 44 for breakfast. As part of a special partnership with our friends across the street, The Greenbriar Country Inn & Suites, we hosted a wedding party weekend on June 29-30, 2013.
As part of the destination wedding in Galena, Susan was charged with making a personal record-setting breakfast for 44. As always, Susan planned her menu, hand-selected the ingredients and turned out the best breakfast in Galena.
Guests dined on Fresh Peach Shortcake w/bourbon sauce, Banana Walnut Bread, Florentine Egg & Bacon Strata.

Pineapple Breakfast Bread

This not-too-sweet breakfast bread is just right with a dollop of pineapple cream cheese spread.
Ingredients
2 c flour
1/4 c sugar
1 1/2 tsp baking powder
1/2 tsp baking soda
1/2 tsp cinnamon
1/4 tsp salt
1/4 c butter 
1 c crushed pineapple – fresh or canned
1/4 c buttermilk
 
In a mixing bowl, blend flour, sugar, baking powder, baking soda, cinnamon and salt.  Cut in butter until crumbly.  Add pineapple and buttermilk and mix just until the dough holds together.  Shape into a circle and transfer to an  8″ greased round cake pan.  Score the top in portions with a sharp knife.  Bake at 375 for 30 – 35 minutes and serve warm with pineapple cream cheese if desired.  Serves 6 – [...]

Birth Announcement

The momma bird who just wouldn’t give up has been rewarded with three babies.  Much to the dismay of our housekeeper, Charles, this bird kept up her nest building efforts right over the door to the cottage!  She rebuilt her nest day after day until, finally, I told Charles to “throw in the towel” and let her have her way.  Yesterday her three eggs hatched and we snapped a picture from a healthy distance.  Check back for updates on the progress of our sweet trio.

Strawberry Rhubarb Coffeecake

Rhubarb facts:
Rhubarb is actually a vegetable
The darker red stalks are more tart than the green ones
Rhubarb leaves are toxic
Farmers Guest House Strawberry Rhubarb Coffeecake is one of the best uses for this varietal ingredient!  (I made this one up, but it is still fact!)

Ingredients:
1/2 c milk
1/4 c butter, softened 
2 eggs
1/4 c sugar + 1 Tablespoon
1 1/2 c flour
1 T baking powder
1/2 t salt
1/2 t cinnamon
1 t dried orange peel
3/4 c fresh strawberries, sliced
3/4 c fresh rhubarb, chopped
Topping -
1/2 c flour
1/2 c sugar
1/4 c butter, softened
1/4 c shredded coconut
